| Here's a slice of American life during the First World War. Comic
Singing. Expressions of religious faith. Sentimental songs.
Patriotic songs. Band selections. The same material found in
"mainstream" recordings of the era, but in a foreign language and targeted
to a specific ethnic group.
These discs were purchased all at the same time at a flea market in Salem, Oregon. Like early Blues and Country records, Ethnic 78s are mostly found in "well loved" condition, which means they are scratched and worn. The discs used in this release are no exception, although perhaps just a little better than average. I have employed no noise reduction, so there will be significant noise not found in more "commercial" releases. I will leave it to the listener to "turn the treble down", run through filters, spend $80,000 on CEDAR etc, if so inclined. All of these selections were recorded by the Columbia Phonograph Company in New York, New York between 1913 and 1919. Tracks:
