BROWNSVILLE

In 1846 a group of settlers with their covered wagons journeyed into the beautiful Willamette Valley until they arrived on the banks of the Calapooya River. It was here that they decided their journey would end. The vast fields of grass was so tall that their cattle were lost from their owners sight. These hearty pioneers formed the foundation for the making of a civilization. Alexander and Sarah Kirk established a small ferry to cross the river. The area became know as "Calapooya or Kirk's Ferry". Hugh Brown and his nephew James Blakely started a store south of the river. It was then that Blakely laid out a town on his land and named it after his Uncle calling it Brownsville. With Brownsville on the south, two communities developed on the north side of the River, North Brownsville and Amelia. In 1895 the communities consolidated and the City of Brownsville was established.

Today the people of Brownsville take great pride in their historic town and the preservation of their small town peaceful atmosphere as they move into the future
