C.O.P.'s Liberal/Conservative Scores Explained

Please Note: This is the final list of Liberal/Conservative Scores through October 20, 1998 (538 possible votes). Totals, comparisons, party grouping, state grouping, summaries and other lists are available to subscribers.

Our list of members documents the changes that occurred during the 1998 Session. This report includes only those who are current members of the House.

C.O.P. has created a measurement of the number of times a member has voted is support of Liberal/Conservative positions. Excluded from consideration were Journal votes, votes without opposition, votes where both Liberals and Conservatives had the same position, votes where Liberals or Conservatives did not register a position, and votes where an individual did not vote. C.O.P. considers Liberals/Conservatives to have taken a position on a vote when 2/3 of its voting members vote the same way. Therefore, the number in the "Support Votes" column represent the number of times a member has voted with 2/3 of the Progressive Caucus (Liberal) or Conservative Action Team and Family Caucus (Conservative). {The Conservative position was defined as those votes where BOTH CATs and FC took the same position}. The number in the "Poss. Votes" column equals the number of possible votes that member could have voted in support. {There were 279 votes where 2/3 of the Progressive Caucus voted opposite 2/3 of the Conservative Action Team AND the Family Caucus. Missing a vote or voting "Present" reduced the number of possible votes for that member. "Percent Support" is the percentage of the time the member voted with 2/3 of the appropriate group (or Support Votes divided by Possible votes expressed as a percent).

C.O.P. does not draw conclusions from this data. Some members may be proud of their high support scores while others may view their moderate scores as an asset. Viewers of this data may also regard the information positively or negatively. Our purpose is to provide voters with another piece of meaningful information.

Bernie Sanders is the only Independent. His scores were grouped with the Democrats.
