Celebrating 32 Years of Publishing!

CALYX, A Journal of Art and Literature by Women

A forum for women’s creative work—including work by women of color, lesbian and bisexual women, young women, old women—CALYX Journal breaks new ground. Each issue is packed with new poetry, short stories, artwork, photography, essays, and reviews. CALYX celebrates its 32nd year with the publication of a full-color Summer 2008 issue (Volume 24:3).

CALYX Journal is known for discovering important writers, such as Julia Alvarez, Paula Gunn Allen, Olga Broumas, Natalie Goldberg, Barbara Kingsolver, and Sharon Olds, among the more than 3,800 writers published during our first 32 years. CALYX was the first to publish the artwork of Frida Kahlo in color in the U.S. In 1980 CALYX also featured work by the Nobel

CALYX holds a special place in my heart…Without them, we would lose much more than feminist thought – we would lose color and diversity, poetry, the outside chance, the underdog’s story, the heretical questions, the answers we need.”
Barbara Kingsolver

Laureate poet Wislawa Zymborska--the first English translations of her work published in the U.S. CALYX is the recipient of the Oregon Governor’s Arts Award, the Stanley H. Holbrook Award from Oregon Literary Arts, Pushcart Prizes, and American Literary Magazine Awards, among others.

[CALYX] is a paragon of the literary arts, [an] exemplar of what great writing and editing can create. From here will come our literary heritage.”
John Berry, editor-in-chief of Library Journal

CALYX stands out from the crowd.” “Thank you for all your good and beautiful work.”
The Utne Reader Gloria Steinem

“CALYX is an aesthetic pleasure to hold and to look at, as well as to read and remember.”
Robin Morgan
“The work you do brings dignity, intelligence, and a sense of wholeness to the world.”
